China is now the world's largest manufacturer of compact construction machines. Over 20 years, Chinese factories have advanced enormously — to the point that many European brands have all or part of their machines built there. The upside: prices 30 to 50% below traditional brands (Kubota, Caterpillar, Bobcat) for comparable performance. The key is to choose your supplier well — here are the pitfalls and the right approach.
Why buy a Chinese mini excavator?
With new machines available from €4,125 excl. VAT versus €15,000 to €25,000 for an equivalent European model, direct import is a genuine economic opportunity. But buying online without going through a serious importer exposes you to major problems.
Machines delivered in pieces
This is the number-one problem. To cut transport costs, many sellers ship mini excavators in parts: arm, turret, tracks, hydraulic motor — everything arrives separately. You receive crates of parts with no clear instructions and no suitable tools. Reassembly requires hydraulics skills, an overhead crane or a crane, and often several days of work. The risk of mis-connecting the hydraulic circuits is high and can damage the machine on the very first start-up. Worse: some sellers don't even warn you that the machine arrives dismantled.
No after-sales when there is a problem
A China-based seller offers you no after-sales service. In the event of a breakdown:
- No one comes out to diagnose or repair
- Spare parts are unobtainable in France — 4 to 8 weeks' wait from China
- The warranty is non-existent in practice against a supplier 10,000 km away
- Technical support is limited to roughly-translated WeChat exchanges
On such a technical product, a mechanical or hydraulic issue will arise sooner or later. Having after-sales in France makes the difference between 2 days of downtime and 2 months.
Extremely variable quality
There are hundreds of factories in China, and quality ranges from the best to the worst. The good factories use components from recognised brands (Kubota, Laidong engines, certified pumps), with quality control and established exports to Europe. The bad factories assemble cut-price components with no control, rough welds and undersized hydraulics. On an Alibaba listing, you can't tell the difference: only a physical audit of the factory can.
CE marking and European compliance
CE marking is mandatory for any machine sold in the EU. For a mini excavator, it attests to compliance with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC (replaced by the Machinery Regulation 2023/1230/EU from 2027). It guarantees operator safety (standard EN 474), a certified noise level, an available technical file and a manual in the local language.
A machine without valid CE marking carries major risks: insurance may refuse cover in an accident, the machine can be seized in an inspection, and the private importer becomes legally responsible for bringing it into compliance.
At CZN Machinery, every machine is delivered with CE marking, a declaration of conformity and a manual — compliance included in the price, with no hidden fees.
Customs duties and import taxes
Chinese mini excavators fall under customs code CN 8429 52, subject to a 2.5% customs duty on the CIF value (cost + insurance + freight). On a machine at €10,000 excl. VAT with €2,000 of freight, the duty is ~€300. VAT at 20% is due on the CIF value + duties at clearance (reclaimable for a VAT-registered business). On top come clearance fees (€150 to €400), sea-port fees (€1,500 to €3,000 for a 20' container), handling (€200 to €500) and inland transport. In total, logistics costs often represent 20 to 35% of the machine price — which "ex-works" prices conveniently hide.
At CZN, the import is handled in our own name: the displayed price is the price delivered in France, all taxes and fees included, with no customs formalities on your side.
Buying on Alibaba vs going through CZN
| Criterion | Direct Alibaba purchase | Via CZN Machinery |
|---|---|---|
| Listed price | €3,500 to €6,000 (ex-works) | €4,125 excl. VAT (delivered) |
| Real price delivered to France | €6,500 to €10,000 | €4,125 excl. VAT (all in) |
| Machine delivered assembled | Rarely — often in kit form | Always, ready to use |
| CE marking | Variable, often absent | Guaranteed + declaration |
| Manual | Generally absent | Included |
| Effective warranty | Virtually non-existent | 24 months in France |
| After-sales and parts | 4 to 8 weeks' wait | Permanent stock in France |
| Recourse in a dispute | Very difficult (Chinese law) | French law |
| Handover training | None | 30 min on site |
Once all costs are factored in and the risks assessed, buying via CZN is often cheaper overall than direct import — without any of the risks.
Emissions and noise standards
Diesel engines in non-road machinery are subject to EU Regulation 2016/1628 (Stage V), applied to new engines since 1 January 2020, with strict limits on particulates, NOx and CO. Any engine sold new in Europe must be Stage V certified (or an equivalent standard for small displacements). The Noise Directive 2000/14/EC caps the guaranteed sound level at 96 dB(A) for mini excavators under 50 kW. Finally, hydraulic and engine oils are hazardous waste: collect them in sealed containers and dispose of them at a professional waste facility, never in the environment.
Buying safely: the 6 criteria
- Go through an established French importer: verifiable company registration, physical address, customer reviews
- Demand a French contractual warranty: 12 to 24 months, parts and labour
- Check for a spare-parts stock in France
- Make sure the machine arrives assembled, with commissioning and training
- Ask about the origin of the key components: engine, pump, cylinders
- Require CE marking and the declaration of conformity
The CZN approach: direct import without the risks
CZN Machinery has been importing mini excavators since 2019, with a simple principle: direct-import prices, with the guarantees of a French dealer. The work rests on 3 partner factories (LEITE, SONCA, XCAVATOR) selected after audits, with trips to China several times a year to check manufacturing, components and testing before shipment. The after-sales return rate is below 3%. Every machine arrives fully assembled and tested, with flatbed transport, preparation by our mechanics, a 30-minute handover and documentation. The warranty is 24 months, with a team in Toulouse, nationwide call-outs and a permanent parts stock.

In summary
Buying a Chinese mini excavator is an excellent way to cut your budget — provided you go through a serious importer that guarantees quality, delivers the machine assembled and offers genuine after-sales in France. The savings are real (30 to 50%), but they're worth nothing if the machine breaks down with no one to step in. CZN Machinery offers 19 models from 600 kg to 4 tonnes from €4,125 excl. VAT, with a 24-month warranty and France-based after-sales.
