Renting a mini excavator is the natural choice for a one-off job: digging a trench, preparing a patio, pulling out stumps or clearing a plot over a weekend. This guide breaks down the real rates, what is and isn't included, the questions of licences and transport, the sensible duration — and the point where renting stops being the good deal.

Mini excavator rental prices

The rate mainly depends on weight and duration. Here are the ranges seen in France (excluding options):

WeightDayWeekendWeek
Micro excavator (< 1 t)€130 to €190 excl. VAT€200 to €300 excl. VAT€500 to €750 excl. VAT
Mini excavator 1.5 t€200 to €280 excl. VAT€300 to €420 excl. VAT€750 to €1,100 excl. VAT
Mini excavator 2.5 t€280 to €400 excl. VAT€420 to €600 excl. VAT€1,100 to €1,600 excl. VAT
Mini excavator 3.5 t+€350 to €500 excl. VAT€520 to €750 excl. VAT€1,400 to €2,000 excl. VAT

Careful: this rate is only the visible part. In peak season (April to October), prices rise 20 to 40% and machines need booking 2 to 4 weeks ahead.

What's included (and what isn't)

The advertised daily rate rarely covers everything. Budget on top:

  • Round-trip transport: €80 to €250 excl. VAT depending on distance and weight. Often the first hidden cost.
  • Fuel: at your expense, count 4 to 10 L/h of diesel depending on the machine.
  • Damage insurance: €20 to €60/day, all but essential.
  • Deposit: €500 to €3,000 held during the rental.
  • Attachments: specific buckets, hydraulic breaker or auger often charged at €30 to €100/day.

The result: a day renting a 1.5 t actually works out at €350 to €550 excl. VAT all in, and a full week at €1,750 to €2,750 excl. VAT.

Where to rent a mini excavator

National rental firms

Chains present across France (such as Kiloutou, Loxam…). A large fleet, recent, well-maintained machines, but higher rates and transport often charged.

Local and agricultural rental

Equipment dealers, cooperatives or nearby civil-works firms. Often more flexible on price and duration, but variable availability.

Peer-to-peer rental

Platforms connect owners and renters. Attractive rates and proximity, provided you check the insurance and the machine's condition carefully.

Renting more than a few days a year?

A new mini excavator starts at €4,125 excl. VAT — barely more than a week's rental.

Do you need a licence or training?

To operate a mini excavator for strictly private use (on your own property), no licence is legally required, but training or a proper handover is strongly recommended for safety. For professional use (or an employee), the CACES R482 category A is required. On the transport side, towing a trailer loaded with a mini excavator depends on the combined weight: above certain thresholds a BE licence or a suitable trailer is needed. We cover all this in our CACES mini excavator guide.

How long should you rent? The threshold rule

Renting makes sense over short periods. Simple markers:

  • 1 to 5 days: renting is fully justified — no maintenance, no storage.
  • 1 to 2 weeks a year in total: renting is still possible but the bill adds up fast.
  • Beyond 15 days a year: buying becomes the rational choice (see our detailed calculation in buy or rent).

What to check before renting

  • General condition: tracks, no hydraulic leaks, starting.
  • Attachments supplied: which buckets, quick-hitch present, breaker if needed.
  • Insurance: exactly what it covers, excess, conditions.
  • Return terms: fuel level, cleaning, hours, late penalties.
  • Transport: delivered/collected by the rental firm, or your responsibility?

The alternative: buy from €4,125 excl. VAT

A full week's rental all in (€1,750 to €2,750 excl. VAT) already approaches the price of a new micro excavator with a 24-month warranty. At CZN, new mini excavators start at €4,125 excl. VAT, imported directly, with delivery in France and aftersales. Financed over 48 months, the monthly payment is often lower than the cost of a single day's rental — and the machine stays a resaleable asset. If you're unsure, our team works out the break-even point with you based on your use.

Our verdict

For a one-off job of a few days, mini excavator rental remains the simplest solution: just remember to factor transport, insurance and deposit into your real budget. But as soon as use becomes recurring — even a few days spread across the year — buying regains the advantage, both financially and in availability. Do the maths before you book: the tipping point comes sooner than you'd think.
